Binding of cobalt and zinc by organic acids and culture filtrates of Aspergillus niger grown in the absence or presence of insoluble cobalt or zinc phosphate

چکیده
The ability of commercially-available citric, oxalic and gluconic acids to bind Co#+ and Zn#+ was investigated and compared with culture filtrates from Aspergillus niger, a fungus capable of citric, gluconic and oxalic acid production, grown in the presence and absence of cobalt or zinc phosphate. This work demonstrated that citric and oxalic acid and the A. niger culture filtrates can bind Co#+ and Zn#+ and in some cases, the culture filtrates were more efficient than commercial organic acids. Gluconic acid did not bind Co#+ or Zn#+ under the conditions used in this study. The presence of insoluble metal phosphates in the growth medium was found to markedly influence the production of organic acids and, while large concentrations of gluconic acid were produced in the presence of Co $ (PO % ) # , the culture filtrate was unable to bind Zn#+. The production of oxalic acid by A. niger when grown in the presence of Zn $ (PO % ) # led to the precipitation of insoluble zinc oxalate, a phenomenon with implications for metal tolerance and toxicity. The significance of these findings in relation to the environmental mobility of metals and phosphate, and the role of fungi in such transformations are discussed.

Extraction of Zn, Mn and Co from Zn-Mn-Co-Cd-Ni containing solution using D2EHPA, CYANEX® 272 and CYANEX® 302
Effects of pH, D2EHPA, Cyanex® 302 and Cyanex® 272 on extractions of zinc, manganese and cobalt from a Zn-Mn-Co-Cd-Ni containing solution was comprehensively investigated at the room temperature. The addition of Cyanex® 302 indicated a left-shifting-effect on the extraction curve of zinc, a right-shifting-effect on the extraction curve of manganese and no effect on the extraction of cobalt. The...

This paper reports on the recovery of zinc, cobalt and manganese by two-step leaching of zinc-plants purification residue with sulfuric acid. The residue, hot filter press cake (HFC), contains 14 % ZnO, 4.8 % Co3O4 and 22.9 % MnO. Effects of different parameters are determined and used to optimize the process. With acid to hot filter press cake (HFC) stoichiometry of 0.85, acid concentration of...

The antimicrobial activity of some novel ascorbic acid-metal complexes [bisascorbate complexes of copper (II), zinc(II), manganese (11), iron (111), cobalt(II), lead(II) and cadmium(II)] was investigated. Four standard strains of bacterial species - Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Klebsiella pneumonia and four fungal species - Trichophyton sp. Penicillium sp....
متن کاملSimultaneous Spectrophotometric Determination of Iron, Cobalt and Copper by Partial Least-Squares Calibration Method in Micellar Medium
Iron, cobalt and copper are metals, which appear together in many real samples, both natural and artificial. Recently a classical univariate micellar colorimetric method has been developed for determination of these metal ions. The organized molecular assemblies such as micelles are used in spectroscopic measurements due to their possible effects on the systems of interest. The ability of mi...
متن کاملCheated Minerals in Animal Nutrition
Chelating is the chemical process by which a mineral (iron, cobalt, copper, zinc, and manganese) is combined with a mixture of amino acids and peptides. The resulting substances are known as chelates. Another descriptive term, proteinates, refers to the amino acid bond. These chelated minerals are thought to be more digestible than nonchelated forms. In other words, chelation makes the minerals...
